UVA: Understanding the Sun’s Hidden Effects on Your Skin!

Most people only think about sun protection when they are going to the beach or spending hours outdoors. However, did you know that your skin is exposed to different types of light every single day—even while you’re sitting inside your office, driving your car, or relaxing beside a window?

Understanding the difference between UVA, UVB, and Infrared (IR) radiation is the first step towards protecting your skin from premature ageing and maintaining healthier-looking skin.

What is UV Radiation?

The sun emits different types of rays. The three that are most relevant to skin health are:

  • UVA (Ultraviolet A)
  • UVB (Ultraviolet B)
  • Infrared (IR) radiation

Although they all originate from sunlight, they affect your skin in different ways.

UVA – The Silent Skin Ageing Ray

UVA accounts for approximately 95% of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth’s surface.

Unlike UVB, UVA is present throughout the day, from sunrise until sunset, and its intensity remains relatively constant regardless of the season.

Why is UVA so concerning?

UVA penetrates much deeper into the skin, reaching the dermis where collagen and elastin are located. Over time, repeated exposure may contribute to:

  • Premature skin ageing
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Formation or worsening of melasma
  • Oxidative stress that can damage skin cells

The Indoor Myth

Many people believe they are protected once they are indoors.

Unfortunately, this isn’t entirely true.

UVA can penetrate:

  • Glass windows
  • Car windshields
  • Office windows
  • Large glass panels
  • Thin curtains

This means you may still receive significant UVA exposure while:

  • Working in an office
  • Driving for long periods
  • Sitting beside a window at home
  • Enjoying natural sunlight indoors

Although curtains can reduce some sunlight, they generally do not completely block UVA unless they are specially designed with UV-blocking materials.

If your workspace receives natural daylight through windows, your skin is still being exposed to UVA every day.
